Islamic calligraphy transformed Arabic writing into a supreme art form. From Quran manuscripts to mosque walls, discover how this art glorifies Allah.

Islamic calligraphy (Khat) is considered the highest art form in Islamic civilization. Because the Quran was revealed in Arabic, beautifying Arabic writing became an act of reverence for Allah's word. **Why Calligraphy in Islam?** The absence of figurative representation in religious art (to prevent idolatry) channeled artistic genius into the written word. The Quran itself said: 'Read' — and Muslims took the written word to extraordinary heights. **Major Calligraphic Styles** **1. Kufic** The oldest script, developed in Kufa (Iraq). Angular and majestic. Used in early Quran manuscripts and on the Kiswa of the Kaaba. **2. Naskh** The most readable and widely used script. Developed in the 10th century CE. Used in most modern Quran printing. **3. Thuluth** A large, ornamental script used for headings and mosque decorations. The most revered calligraphic style. **4. Diwani** Developed by Ottoman calligraphers for royal decrees. Flowing and elegant. **5. Nastaliq** The dominant script of Persian, Urdu, and Pashto writing. Known for its flowing, diagonal style. **Calligraphy in Mosques** The interior walls of Masjid al-Haram, Masjid al-Nabawi, and the Dome of the Rock are covered with exquisite calligraphic verses. Reading these inscriptions during Tawaf or prayer adds a profound layer of spiritual engagement. **The Calligrapher's Craft** Traditional calligraphers studied for 10-15 years under a master. Pens were made from dried reeds. Ink preparation was an art itself. A single mistake could ruin hours of work. **Modern Calligraphy** Today, Islamic calligraphy thrives globally as a contemporary art form, with artists combining traditional scripts with modern aesthetics.
