Benefits of Fasting Beyond Ramadan: Sunnah and Voluntary Fasts

Fasting (Sawm) is one of the most powerful acts of worship in Islam. Beyond the obligatory Ramadan fasts, the Prophet (SAW) recommended many voluntary fasting days throughout the year. **Fasting Six Days of Shawwal** The Prophet (SAW) said: 'Whoever fasts Ramadan and follows it with six days of Shawwal, it will be as if he fasted the entire year.' Six days + 29/30 of Ramadan = 36 days, which equals the full year by the principle of each good deed being multiplied 10 times. **Monday and Thursday** The Prophet (SAW) fasted regularly on Mondays and Thursdays. He said: 'Deeds are presented to Allah on Mondays and Thursdays, and I love for my deeds to be presented while I am fasting.' **Three Days of Every Month (Ayyam al-Bid)** Fasting on the 13th, 14th, and 15th of each Islamic month. This is equivalent to fasting the entire month. **Day of Arafah (9th Dhul Hijjah)** Fasting on this day expiates sins of the past year and the coming year. One of the greatest voluntary fasts. **Day of Ashura (10th Muharram)** The Prophet (SAW) fasted on this day when he learned that Musa (AS) fasted it in gratitude for his deliverance from Pharaoh. It expiates sins of the past year.
