From an enslaved man tortured for his faith to the first Muezzin of Islam — the story of Bilal ibn Rabah (RA) is one of the most inspiring in all of Islamic history.

Bilal ibn Rabah al-Habashi (RA) was among the earliest converts to Islam and occupies a unique and beloved place in Islamic history as the first person to call the Adhan (Azan). **Background** Bilal (RA) was an enslaved African man owned by Umayyah ibn Khalaf, a chief of the Quraysh and fierce enemy of Islam. He was among the first to accept Islam in the early days of Makkah. **Torture for Faith** When his master discovered his conversion, Umayyah tortured Bilal (RA) relentlessly: he was placed on scorching desert sand with a heavy rock on his chest and ordered to renounce Islam. Bilal (RA) replied with only one word: 'Ahad! Ahad!' (One! One! — affirming the oneness of Allah). **Abu Bakr Buys His Freedom** Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (RA) purchased Bilal (RA) and freed him. The Prophet (SAW) said he heard Bilal's footsteps in Paradise. **The First Adhan** When the Prophet (SAW) needed to call Muslims to prayer, he chose Bilal (RA) as the Muezzin for his powerful, melodious voice. Bilal (RA) climbed to the highest point in Madinah and called the first Adhan in Islamic history. **Conquest of Makkah** When Makkah was conquered, the Prophet (SAW) honored Bilal (RA) by having him call the Adhan from the top of the Kaaba itself — an extraordinary symbolic moment. **After the Prophet's Passing** Bilal (RA) stopped calling Adhan after the Prophet's death, saying he could not bear it without him. He eventually settled in Syria and passed away around 638 CE. **Legacy** Bilal (RA) is a symbol of Islam's revolutionary stance against racism and oppression. His story proves that in Allah's eyes, the noblest is the most pious — regardless of race or social status.
