The Final Sermon of Prophet Muhammad (SAW)

On the 9th of Dhul Hijjah, 10 AH (March 632 CE), Prophet Muhammad (SAW) stood on the plain of Arafat before over 100,000 companions and delivered his Farewell Sermon (Khutbat al-Wada). He began: 'O People! Listen carefully, for I may not be with you after this year.' **The Key Declarations** **On Blood and Property** 'Your lives and your property are forbidden to one another until you meet your Lord, as this day and this month are sacred.' **On Riba (Interest)** 'All interest is cancelled. The first interest I cancel is that due to my uncle Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib.' **On Women's Rights** 'Fear Allah concerning women. You have rights over them and they have rights over you.' He commanded treating women well — revolutionary for 7th century Arabia. **On Human Equality** 'O People! Your Lord is One and your father is one. An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab, nor a non-Arab over an Arab; a white person has no superiority over a black person, nor a black over white, except by piety and good deeds.' **On the Quran and Sunnah** 'I am leaving you with two things; if you hold to them, you will never go astray: the Book of Allah and my Sunnah.' **The Final Question** Three times the Prophet (SAW) asked: 'Have I delivered the message?' 100,000 voices responded each time: 'Yes!' He raised his finger to heaven: 'O Allah, be my witness.' **The Last Revelation** Shortly after, Allah revealed: 'This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and have chosen Islam as your religion.'
