Istinja and Tahara: The Islamic Concept of Purity

Tahara (purity) is the foundation of Islamic worship. The Prophet (SAW) said: 'Cleanliness is half of faith.' No act of worship (Salah, Tawaf, touching the Quran) is valid without proper physical and ritual purity. **Types of Purity in Islam** **1. Physical Cleanliness** - Istinja: Cleaning private parts after using the bathroom (water is obligatory, toilet paper alone insufficient) - General hygiene: Cutting nails, removing armpit/pubic hair, clipping moustache regularly **2. Ritual Purity (Taharah)** - Wudu (minor ablution): Required for prayer, Quran, Tawaf - Ghusl (major ablution): Required after major ritual impurity (janabah, menstruation) **How to Perform Wudu** 1. Intention (Niyyah) 2. Wash hands 3x 3. Rinse mouth 3x 4. Rinse nose 3x 5. Wash face 3x 6. Wash arms to elbow 3x (right then left) 7. Wipe head once 8. Wipe ears once 9. Wash feet to ankles 3x (right then left) **Nullifiers of Wudu** - Anything exiting from private parts - Deep sleep - Loss of consciousness - Blood, vomit, or pus in large quantities (Maliki/Hanbali view) **During Umrah** Maintain Wudu constantly during your time at the Haram. Wudu facilities are abundant throughout Masjid al-Haram. Being in a state of Wudu at all times is a Sunnah and opens the heart to spiritual presence.
